Behavior Modification Programs

Behavior Modification for family Dogs

Living with a dog who struggles with BIG emotions can feel exhausting and overwhelming. Barking, lunging, fear, or even aggression can leave you wondering what went wrong — and if things will ever get better. At Jenn’s Dogs, we specialize in dog behavior modification programs that help both ends of the leash find relief, clarity, and connection again.

What Is Behavior Modification?

Basic manners training teaches cues like sit, down, or heel. Behavior modification goes deeper, addressing the emotions that drive unwanted behaviors such as fear, anxiety, reactivity, or aggression.

Examples of when behavior modification may be needed include:

  • Barking or lunging at people, dogs, or vehicles
  • Growling, snapping, or biting
  • Difficulty settling at home or tolerating visitors
  • Resource guarding food, toys, or spaces
  • Conflicts between dogs in the same household
  • Fear of new situations, sounds, or changes in routine

If your dog’s behavior is disrupting daily life or creating safety concerns, they likely need behavior modification rather than a basic manners class.

What to Expect

Every program follows a step-by-step process designed to reduce stress first, then build skills, and finally practice them safely with support.

Orientation (human only)

We meet without your dog to create an immediate management plan for safety and stress relief on both ends of the leash.

Enrichment planning with Trainer Chey or jenn

An enrichment planning session tailored to your dog’s unique needs, considering their breed, individual personality, and your household, to improve quality of life through species typical outlets for natural behaviors.

Working sessions with Jenn (in-home)

Sessions begin with decompression for your dog, review of progress, and adjustments as needed. You’ll learn practical skills for clear communication and stress tolerance.

Working sessions with Jenn (virtual)

For families outside our service area or who prefer online support, we offer virtual sessions via Zoom. We’ll review progress, make necessary adjustments, and coach you through the same skills in a supportive online format.

Guided practice

When your team is ready, we support you in applying new skills in real-life, moderated environments.

Ongoing support

Between sessions you’ll have unlimited text and email support, plus progress tracking to keep momentum strong.

Why Choose Jenn’s Dogs?

At Jenn’s Dogs, we believe true change comes from addressing the root of the problem—not just suppressing symptoms. Our behavior programs focus on the emotional experience of both the dog and the guardian, because lasting progress requires safety and understanding on both ends of the leash.

We never use fear, intimidation, or force. Instead, our work centers on building secure attachment, restoring a sense of safety, and creating stronger connection. When dogs feel safe and supported, they are better able to learn, adapt, and heal. When guardians feel empowered and understood, they are better equipped to guide their dogs through stress and toward resolution.

Led by Jenn Friedline, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, and Family Dog Mediator, our team combines professional expertise with deep compassion. Our goal is not just to manage behavior, but to help families work through trauma and find long-term relief together.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Behavior Support

Please reach us at info@jennsdogs.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

If your dog exhibits barking, lunging, growling, excessive fear, frustration, or avoidance behaviors, this program may be a good fit. We focus on behavior modification through force-free methods to help your dog feel safer and more confident. This package is a collaborative effort between you and your dog, with a certified Behavior Consultant to guide you.

These packages are designed to help dogs who struggle with:

  • Fear-based behaviors (hiding, avoidance, cowering)
  • Reactivity toward people, dogs, or environmental triggers
  • Frustration behaviors (leash frustration, excessive vocalizing)
  • General anxiety (difficulty settling, hypervigilance, pacing)

We regularly work with dogs who have a history of bites. Safety is always our first priority. We’ll create a management plan to protect both people and dogs, then guide you through structured behavior modification strategies to reduce risk and stress.

Traditional obedience training, or what we call Basic Manners focuses on teaching cues like "sit" and "stay." These classes are a great way to teach boundaries and rules to your dog. However, our Specialty Services Packages go beyond standard skill training to address how your dog feels and responds to their environment. While training cues may be included, the primary focus is on helping your dog feel safer and more secure.

Behavior modification is a journey, not a quick fix. While we provide you with essential tools, management strategies, and training exercises, long-term success depends on consistency and commitment. Progress varies by dog, but our goal is to set you and your dog on a sustainable path forward.

“Normal” looks different for every dog. With the right support, many dogs can make tremendous progress and enjoy calmer, safer lives. Our goal is not to erase who your dog is, but to help them feel secure and supported so they can thrive.

Every dog is different!  Many families see relief after orientation and enrichment planning, since stress reduction starts right away. Larger changes may take weeks or months of consistent practice.  Behavior change takes time, but we’ll guide you through every step of the process.

You’ll have clear strategies and skills to continue at home We’ll provide continued guidance with our group support sessions. We also offer follow-up sessions to check on your progress, and additional training sessions can be added to your package at any time.

We use force-free, science-based methods including positive reinforcement, desensitization, and counter-conditioning. Our focus is on building secure attachment, safety, and connection—never fear, intimidation, or force.

No ethical trainer can guarantee results, since behavior is influenced by genetics, history, health, and environment. What we do guarantee is ongoing support, a clear plan, and science-based methods proven to help dogs and guardians make progress.

Just like in human therapy, medication can be an important tool when paired with behavior modification. Some dogs need medication to reduce stress enough for learning to take place. Throughout your program, Jenn will help you assess if it’s time to discuss options with your veterinarian.

Yes. We offer in-home sessions in Cornelius, Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Beaverton, and surrounding areas. For families outside this service area, we provide virtual behavior support via Zoom worldwide.

All programs begin with a behavior consultation. During this session, we’ll review your dog’s history, observe their body language, discuss goals, and give you immediate strategies. From there, we’ll recommend the program that best fits your needs.

Consultations are designed to provide relief right away. We’ll create a targeted management plan, begin teaching you how to read your dog’s body language, and outline the program that will give you the most support.
