Recognizing what healthy play looks like isn’t always easy for new puppy guardians. In our Puppy Life Skills program, you'll learn how to identify appropriate play, support positive interactions, and step in when guidance is needed.
Your puppy will have the opportunity to practice giving and responding to play invitations, learning how to take breaks, and respecting the boundaries of others. These early social experiences help puppies develop adaptability, emotional regulation, and strong canine communication skills—tools that lead to better behavior and smoother interactions as they grow.
Our puppy training classes go far beyond playtime—they’re designed to provide purposeful exposure during your dog’s critical early socialization window. By enrolling early, you’re helping your puppy build resilience and confidence in the face of new experiences.
Throughout the program, your puppy will safely encounter a variety of people, puppies, surfaces, sounds, scents, and movement.
For families traveling from nearby areas like Hillsboro, Cornelius, and Forest Grove, this also means early practice with car rides and travel manners—adding another layer of practical training to your puppy’s success story.
As part of our Level 0: Puppy Life Skills program, we introduce foundational husbandry skills—like cooperative care, grooming, nail trims, and vet handling—as a key part of early socialization. By pairing positive experiences with routine care, we help puppies build lifelong confidence around being touched, examined, and handled. This prevents future stress and supports successful vet visits, grooming appointments, and at-home care.
Our force-free approach focuses on building trust and consent-based handling from the start, setting the stage for a lifetime of low-stress care.
Our puppy classes are carefully moderated by certified professionals who specialize in positive, developmentally appropriate training. Jenn Friedline, Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CBCC-KA), Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) and Family Dog Mediator (FDM), designed our Puppy Life Skills program to help guardians raise confident, emotionally balanced adult dogs.
All trainers at Jenn’s Dogs participate in continued education and hands-on mentorship, and are highly skilled in canine body language, communication, and cognition. This means you and your puppy receive thoughtful, well-informed guidance every step of the way.
Held at our clean, indoor training studio in Cornelius, our puppy classes are a safe, supportive space to learn, grow, and play—together.
A secure attachment between you and your puppy is the foundation for lifelong trust, communication, and cooperation. Our Puppy Life Skills classes are designed to strengthen the natural bond you’re already forming, helping you foster a relationship rooted in safety, connection, and mutual understanding.
With expert guidance, you’ll learn how to support your puppy emotionally, even in busy and distracting environments, so your dog learns to look to you for comfort, guidance, and confidence as they grow.
At Jenn’s Dogs, your puppy’s health and safety are our top priority. Our Training Studio is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with veterinary-recommended dog-safe germicides between every class, ensuring a hygienic environment for even the youngest learners.
We are proud to be a trusted choice among veterinarians, breeders, and rescues as a safe space for puppies still completing their core vaccination series. All dogs attending class are required to be current on DAPP (Parvo/Distemper combo) and Rabies (when age-appropriate) to maintain a safe learning environment for all.

Level 0: Puppy Life Skills is a foundational training class for puppies aged 8–16 weeks at the start of class. It focuses on socialization, confidence building, and essential life skills to help puppies grow into well-adjusted adult dogs.
This class covers:
✅ Confidence-building exercises
✅ Proper socialization with people, sounds, textures, and novel objects
✅ Handling and cooperative care (vet and grooming prep)
✅ Introduction to basic manners (sit, down, recall, focus work)
✅ Enrichment activities to prevent problem behaviors
Puppies must be between 8 and 16 weeks old at the start of class to be eligible.
Puppies should have at least one round of DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo, Parainfluenza) and a vet check before starting class. They do not need to be fully vaccinated, as early socialization is crucial during this developmental window.
(We follow the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s position on early socialization, which states that the benefits outweigh the minimal risks.)
Unlike traditional obedience-focused puppy classes, Level 0 prioritizes real-world socialization, confidence-building, and enrichment to help puppies develop resilience and appropriate behaviors in new situations.
That’s exactly what this class is for! We use positive reinforcement and force-free training to help nervous puppies build confidence at their own pace.
Our classes are small, with 4-6 puppies per class. This ensures personalized attention while still providing socialization opportunities.
Yes! We encourage family participation!
Since puppies develop rapidly, it’s best not to miss any classes. However, if you must miss a session, we provide a handbook with information about what is covered in class.
Classes take place at the Jenn’s Dogs Training Studio in Cornelius, OR.
